I met with my mentor Marilyn a few days ago and she shared several truths with me about being judgmental from a Bible study she is doing. I was really encouraged and convicted by what she shared. Here's some of my notes:
Romans 2:1-5
- When we judge others we cause God to be harder on us.
- We do many of the same things we condemn in others
- We often sit on the judgement seat to judge degrees in sin
- Judgement bears hypocrisy
- We do not know the whole truth; God's judgement is based on truth
- We may think we know all the facts
- We are mere humans
- Isa. 29:16
- You turn things upside down as if the potter were the clay
- Stop trying to be God!
- When we judge others we are judging God
- Our judgement reveals contempt for the riches of God's patience
- To judge why God won't bring a speedy punishment is not our responsibility
- "Time is not nearly as important as God's timing." -Adrian Rogers
- God's judgement is always righteous; ours is tainted by the flesh
- Our judgements are colored by our past and personalities
Matthew 7:1-5
- We risk application of the same type of judgement to ourselves
- We can't judge the speck in another's eye because of the plank in our own
- We can't judge righteously because we are tainted by sin
James 4:11-12
- There is only one lawgiver and one judge
- Only God has that right!
- Only God has noble purpose in his judgement
- We judge others to make ourself feel righteous
- God's judgement is not based on His ego
John 8:14-18
- Just like Christ, our judgement would have to be completely consistent with God's but we judge by human standards
